Getting Started with Your New Aquarium
Most people are under the mistaken impression that a salt water aquarium, which is also known as a marine aquarium, is much harder to maintain than a fresh water aquarium. Speaking from over 20 years of experience I must disagree with this. If you take the time in the beginning to do a little research and set up your system with the right equipment, maintaining your salt water tank will take only slightly more effort and a bit more knowledge than it's fresh water cousin. And if you've ventured into the marine aquaria section of your local pet store, it's immediately obvious that this extra effort pays of exponentially in the appearance and visual appeal that a marine aquarium can offer. So, if you're ready to get started, let's get to it!
There are a few things to consider before you're ready to go to the local pet shop and make that first purchase:
What kind of animals will you keep in your aquarium? Only fish? Invertebrates like starfish, shrimp and crabs? Maybe a reef tank filled with live rock, corals and anemones?
Which animals can live together and which will prey on one another?
What size tank? There are many factors that come into play here ranging from your
available space to the size of your pocketbook.
The following pages will cover these topics and more to help you make the right decisions from the start and help take the guesswork out of setting up an aquarium that will bring you year after year of enjoyment.
